  • Eric Musgrave

Eric Musgrave has spent more than 24 years as a full-time magazine journalist and has been editing titles for 20 years. He views magazines as uniquely flexible media which need clear direction from strong editors at the head of versatile, coherent, integrated teams.

Eric has directed launches and relaunches successfully, he has coordinated trilingual and bilingual magazines, and personally he has done almost every job on magazines from news reporter to fashion stylist to sub-editor.

He has a very commercial approach to editorial and believes the editor should also be brand guardian of the title.

He is regularly called upon to comment on issues relating to fashion retailing by television and radio news programmes. He is a trustee of the retail trade charity Retail Trust and a judge for this year's Periodical Publishers' Association awards.

Eric Musgrave was named Editor of the Year for Business and Professional Weekly Magazines by the PPA in 2003. He was also Editor of the Year in the Emap Communications awards in 2003 and Drapers was named re-launch of the year.

Despite being in an industry that is about communication, journalism still suffers from a lack of relevant training and passing on of experience. Too often people are given a new job, or are promoted, and then are largely left to learn on the job - just as their predecessors did. This is a sad waste of an opportunity for coaching and mentoring.

While general training sessions can be beneficial, one-to-one or small gatherings allow specific training requirements and day-to-day problems to be explored and examined, and the trainee arrives at realistic solutions.

In today's fast-moving and multi-skilled arena, editors and department heads need a wide range of management skills and commercial sense to complement the basic journalistic knowledge. Editors and senior journalists who understand the bigger publishing picture make a greater contribution to their titles.
