Amnesty International
Type of Business
Amnesty International (AI) is a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights.
AI's vision is of a world in which every person enjoys all of the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international human rights standards.
In pursuit of this vision, AI's mission is to undertake research and action focused on preventing and ending grave abuses of the rights to physical and mental integrity, freedom of conscience and expression, and freedom from discrimination, within the context of its work to promote all human rights.
Programme Objective
Following an expressed need for developing better meeting processes, Amnesty International invested in a 'Running Effective Meetings' programme which was attended by staff members and managers. This was to improve meeting practice as well as to allow for a consistent format for meetings and for this format to cascade throughout the organisation.
The Solution and Outcome
360 ran two half-day sessions on 'Running Effective Meetings' for managers and two half-day sessions for staff champions. The first set of half-day sessions focused on exploring the different communication preferences and styles and the impact such styles have on meetings.
The second set focused on exploring the key competencies required to run an effective meeting, the structure, the role for preparation and the chair and the importance of control within the meeting, especially when dealing with meeting disrupters.
In order to fully cascade a consistent format for meetings within the organisation, all staff champions' sessions took a slightly different slant. These were tailored to a ÔTrain to TrainÕ session, so that each Staff Champion had the skills, understanding and content to run the sessions themselves to the rest of the organisation. They were not only supplied with access to all the content but also a set of training notes.
360 will be running 'Clinic' sessions in April, where everyone is invited to share their own experiences of meetings since the training, but to also discuss any issues or challenges that they may be facing.
Delegate comments
All evaluation comments have been very satisfying. We have also had informal feedback from managers so far, which has been positive as they were very happy with the training. In fact one manager commented that it was the best training she had been on at the IS.
Client comments
I have been happy with the openness and approachability from the 360 team. I am also pleased that all Managers and Staff Champions have been happy with the training. My only concern is that the Staff Champions need more time to get acquainted with the content before delivering the sessions, however the trainer will be supplying further content and support to help this process.
