Personal Effectiveness

Look around any office and you will see people trying to juggle the demands of ever increasing workloads within what seems to be an ever - decreasing time -frame. Rule one of personal effectiveness says to be truly efficient you have to accept the law of enforced efficiency. That is there will never be enough time to do all the things you have to do, you just have to make sure you spend your time doing the right things. But that’s the challenging bit – how do you know if you are doing the right things. Simply put you can look at your workload and label them as quick wins, major projects, and thankless tasks and fill ins. Most of us procrastinate over the major projects or the big things, the projects or tasks that will really contribute to organizational performance but take a lot of effort and gravitate towards the many numerous little things that clog up our in box. Why? Because we get some satisfaction from getting lots of itty-bitty things done. How satisfying to get 17 little things done before lunch!

I’ve got news for you. However satisfying it might be your time would be better-spent grabbing hold of the major project and planning just how you intend to get it done. If you are procrastinating it may be a good idea to work out what’s stopping you from getting stuck in? Was the project briefed out well enough. Do you have the information you need to get you started? Are you worried you don’t have the necessary skills set? Or is it just something you don’t think you will enjoy. Whatever the reason, do something about it – careers and promotions are often decided on the delivery of those projects that make significant contributions to organizational success.
